This new residential development is based around a major refurbishment of a student hostel built in the early 1950s.

The ground floor, occupied by a nursery school, needed to remain open and safe throughout all construction work. In addition to the total refurbishment of the original building, an extra storey was added to the 3 storey building.

We were responsible for the assessment of the existing structure, all strengthening works and the design of all new structural elements. To avoid overstressing of the existing frame and foundations, the existing non-structural elements were rationalised, to ensure that the new 4 storey building was not heavier than the original 3 storey structure.
