Huddersfield University - Creative Arts Building.

The new Creative Arts Building at Huddersfield University is a state-of-the art structure offering purpose built studios and dedicated lecture theatres for various areas of the creative arts including art, music, graphic design and architecture. One innovative feature is a distinctive, ‘cube-shaped’ electro-acoustic research studio which cantilevers from one corner of the building.

The building consists of two single spanning curved profiles and is spread over three storeys with part of the second floor hanging from the third.
DDA designed the floor slabs and roof using a Cobiax semi-precast concrete structural floor system to help reduce foundation loads and increase the speed of construction on site. The use of this form of construction enabled the floor slabs to be kept to a minimum thickness.
The reduction in the volume of concrete, due to the void formers, contributes significantly to environmental benefits and a reduction of up to one third of embodied carbon dioxide (CO2).
